Never set foot on the mat before? Don't worry, we welcome people of all levels of experience to our sessions. So come along and give it a try. Your first session is free.
Simply drop by at a session, just check the Training Times or Facebook group to see when we train. You can join in at any point in the semester, so don't worry if you've missed the taster sessions.
What to wear
If you are a beginner all you need to bring are some gym clothes, such as joggers and a t-shirt. You don't need any shoes. There are changing rooms next to the gym we practice in.
Before coming onto the mat, it is a good idea to tie back any long hair. For safety purposes, you'll also need to remove any jewellery or cover them with tape if they can't be removed. We can supply tape if you don't have any.
What to expect
So what does a typical session look like?
After laying out the mats we usually start with a 10-15 minute warm-up, which is a mix of cardio training and strength exercises.
This is followed by some falling practice that involves learning how to roll and fall safely. After this, the instructor demonstrates and explains a technique step-by-step. We then pair up and get to practice it on each other. Then more demonstrations, more practice and so on.
At the end, we usually get to pressure test what we have learned to see how well we can apply our new skills.
